System of Logic, Ethics, and Metaphysics, 1683-1684.

This volume consists of 228 pages, divided into three sections of several chapters each, and transcribed by Morton in 1683 and 1684. The first section, "A System of Logic," is subdivided into three parts totaling twenty-three chapters concerning Substance, Predicables, Relation, Syllogism, and the like; the second section, "A System of Ethics," contains ten chapters, including Moral Philosophy and Friendship, followed by seventy-eight pages of Latin on the same subject; and the third section contains six chapters on "A System of Metaphysics," including ones on Simple Affections and Disjunct Affections following Unity. These transcriptions may have been part of a course Morton may have been taking as a student.

Nicholas Morton ( -1689) was the grandson of Rev. Nicholas Morton ( - ) of Southwark, England, who was the pastor of John Harvard (1607-1638), founder of Harvard College. Nicholas' uncle was Rev. Charles Morton (1626-1698), Puritan teacher, emigrant in 1686, and First Vice-President of Harvard. Nicholas came to America in 1685, entered Harvard on Advanced Standing the following year, and was accepted in the Charlestown, Mass., church in 1687. From the description of System of Logic, ...
